It’s the month of love and giving. Everywhere you turn is “I Love You” cards, red roses, cute fluffy teddy bears, heart shaped chocolates, scented candles and kissing couples. One big heart to that. But let’s just leave that awww…we-love-each-other-very-much stuff for now, and see some funny facts about Valentine’s day. Bet you don’t know most of these fun facts that I’m sure they’ll make you laugh :) .

Fun fact no.1: In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who their valentines would be. They would wear these names on their sleeves for one week. Today, to wear your heart on your sleeve means being transparent with your affections.

Fun fact no.2:  In Japan, women are expected to give chocolate and other gifts to men on Valentine’s Day. This tradition was started as a marketing campaign by Japanese chocolate companies. Men are not off the hook, unfortunately. They are expected to return the favor on March 14th, commonly known as White Day. Interesting right?

Fun facts no.3: Penicillin, a popular treatment for venereal diseases such as syphilis, was introduced to the world on Valentine’s Day (February 14, 1929). How’s that!

Fun fact no.4: According to the condom company Durex, condom sales are highest around Valentine’s Day, which are 20 percent to 30 percent higher than usual. Yes, love happens between the sheets.

Fun fact no.5: In the US, 64 percent of men do not make plans in advance for a romantic Valentine’s Day with their sweethearts. Why we’re not surprised.

Fun fact no.6: Every Valentine’s Day, the Italian city of Verona, where Shakespeare’s lovers Romeo and Juliet lived, receives about 1,000 letters addressed to Juliet. Last year I sent one too :)

Fun fact no.7: Many believe the “X” symbol became synonymous with the kiss in medieval times. People who couldn’t write their names signed in front of a witness with an “X.” The “X” was then kissed to show their sincerity. Sealed with a kiss :X.

Fun fact no.8: Teachers receive the most valentines, followed by kids, mothers, wives and sweethearts. Be my Valentine dear teacher (and please give me A on my math test) :)

Fun fact no.9: If an individual thinks of five or six names considered to be suitable marriage partners and twists the stem of an apple while the names are being recited, then it is believed the eventual spouse will be the one whose name was recited at the moment the stem broke. One apple for me please, I have to try this.

Fun fact no.10: About 3% of pet owners will give Valentine’s Day gifts to their pets. You lucky dog!
