It might be the most cringe-worthy few seconds in TV history — Kathie Lee Gifford asked Martin Short how his wife is doing, although there was one small problem. She died 2 years ago.
A rather charming Today show chat with Martin Short took an awkward turn.
Martin appeared on “The Today Show“to promote his new movie, “Madagascar 3″ — when Kathie asked:
Short, not correcting the NBC co-host, responded they were married 36 years.
Gifford went on to say that the couple were still “madly in love,” and cheekily asked “why?”
Short joked it was because he was “cute,” and then the interview moved on to new material.
Apparently Kathie didn’t get the memo! Martin’s wife Nancy Dolman died in August 2010 from ovarian cancer.
Made aware of her error, the Today show host apologized on air and also Tweeted on Wednesday afternoon:
“I send my sincerest apologies to @MartinShort and his family. He handled situation w/enormous grace and kindness and I’m so grateful.”

Short's wife, Nancy Dolman, died of natural causes after battling cancer.
