Tom Cruise Tops Forbes’ List of Highest Paid Actors

Hopefully this will cheer up Tom Cruise a bit.

The movie star, who is still licking his wounds after his wife of five years, Katie Holmes, unexpectedly filed for divorce last week, has been named by Forbes as the highest paid actor of the past year.

Between May 2011 and May 2012, he has pulled in an incredible $75 million.

And because Holmes signed a prenup, Cruise will keep almost all of it!

Tom Cruise Tops Forbes' List of Highest Paid Actors

The thespian had a huge year with 2011′s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, which earned $700 million at the box office world wide, and according to Forbes, the actor was also paid heavily for Oblivion, which is set to hit theaters in April 2013.

Cruise surpassed Leonardo DiCaprio and funnyman Adam Sandler for the honor – both of them tied for second place with identical $37 million fortunes, netted during the same 12-month period.

Being a certified movie star, it’s not surprising that DiCaprio commands huge paydays, even if his track record can be hit or miss. His 2010 blockbuster Inception was followed by 2011 hit J. Edgar, which earned a paltry $80 million globally, according to the magazine.

Unlike DiCaprio, Sandler rakes in the big bucks only because he can get people into seats – regardless of how terrible reviews his  movie receives. Sandler’s movie Jack and Jill, for example, managed to earn $150 million at the box office, despite winning a whopping 10 Razzie Awards.

Here is a look at the top ten actors, salary-wise, in the movie industry from May 2011 through May 2012:

  • Tom Cruise ($75m)
  • Leonardo DiCaprio ($37m)
  • Adam Sandler ($37m)
  • Dwayne Johnson ($36m)
  • Ben Stiller ($33m)
  • Sacha Baron Cohen ($30m)
  • Johnny Depp ($30m)
  • Will Smith ($30m)
  • Mark Wahlberg ($27m)
  • Taylor Lautner ($26.5m)
  • Robert Pattinson ($26.5m)
