It’s official! Peter Jackson has confirmed that “The Hobbit” will become a trilogy.

Yep, it's true!
After last month’s rumors at San Diego’s Comic Con Peter Jackson has officially confirmed on his Facebook page that the film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien‘s 1937 book will be broken up into three pieces.
“It is only at the end of a shoot that you finally get the chance to sit down and have a look at the film you have made,” Peter Jackson wrote.
“Recently Fran [Walsh], Phil[lippa Boyens] and I did just this when we watched for the first time an early cut of the first movie — and a large chunk of the second. We were really pleased with the way the story was coming together, in particular, the strength of the characters and the cast who have brought them to life. All of which gave rise to a simple question: do we take this chance to tell more of the tale? And the answer from our perspective as the filmmakers, and as fans, was an unreserved ‘yes.’”
The third “Hobbit” film is set for a summer 2014 release date.
The first installment in the trilogy, subtitled “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” arrives on Dec. 14, while the second film “The Hobbit: There And Back Again” is out on Dec. 15, 2013.
Well Middle-Earth fans, aren’t you excited or what?

three is the magic number!
