Michael Phelps was so close to victory, even his mom thought he had it!
The best US swimmer held a half body-length lead into the final lap of a race he hadn’t
However, we can’t blame Pheps’ mom, Debbie, for reacting as her son had won, since everyone watching the race at the London Aquatic Center and at home on TV reacted pretty much the same way.

He maybe got second, but he is still the iconic athlete who broke the all-time Olympic medal record. Taking the first place in the 4x200m Freestyle Relay Tuesday (July 31) he made history winning 19 total medals over three Olympics.
Apart from holding the all-time Olympic medal record, Michael Phelps reached the mark for most Gold Olympic medals (15) and broke the record for most Golden medals in individual events (9).
